For those who count cross-country skiing among their favourite winter sports, the Wipptal in Tyrol is just the right place. The Wipptal and its side valleys are considered an insider tip for all those who like to glide gently through an intact, beautiful winter landscape away from the hustle and bustle.

The 85 km of cross-country trails are varied and can also be used free of charge. The mountain climbing village of Gschnitztal in particular has excellent facilities for cross-country skiers.

Going where not everyone goes. In peace, surrounded by unspoilt nature, the snow-covered mountains. Valleys bathed in white, criss-crossed by cross-country ski trails. In the Wipptal in Tyrol and its side valleys you can enjoy the gentle, healthy sport of cross-country skiing away from the crowds and without having to pay for it.

A total of 85 km of cross-country trails in all degrees of difficulty, classic and skating, await you. About 40 km of them are in the Gschnitztal valley and thus right on the doorstep of our Landgasthof Hohe Burg!

Cross-country skiing is good for the body because it is a very gentle sport that does not put much strain on the joints but moves the whole body. In the Gschnitztal valley, you can practise this popular winter sport surrounded by unspoilt nature.

Approximately 40 km of cross-country trails for all abilities await you. Due to their spaciousness, the beautiful, unspoilt surroundings and the superb grooming and maintenance, our cross-country ski trails have been awarded the Tyrolean cross-country skiing quality seal.

All you have to do is step out of the door and you can set off on a beautiful tour on one of the cross-country trails in the Gschnitztal valley in Tyrol. Cross-country skiing is a real pleasure here, because you ski on flat, wide trails that have been awarded the Tyrolean cross-country skiing seal of quality and thus have very special characteristics.

Even in the higher mountain areas near Gschnitz, Trins or Maria Waldrast, the trails are also very sure to be snow-covered. By the way, all trails can be used free of charge.

Well equipped for the trails

You usually take enough stuff with you on holiday anyway. To avoid the hassle of lugging around cross-country equipment, there are also rental shops in the area. Cross-country skiing equipment and professional courses for beginners and advanced skiers are offered by the Bergeralm Ski School and Hansi's Ski School in Steinach am Brenner.

You can also simply leave your car at home, because with the guest card you can use the public bus lines throughout the Wipptal and side valleys free of charge and thus reach your destination cross-country ski run very comfortably!

We have put together our favourite cross-country skiing trails for you here. As you use them, you will feel the silence of the mountains and breathe the healthy mountain air.

Gschnitztal valley cross-country ski trail

The cross-country ski trail in the Gschnitztal valley near Trins is one of the most beautiful trails in Tyrol. The beautifully prepared course runs for approx. 26 km from Steinach via Trins to Gschnitz. Framed by a magnificent mountain panorama, the Gschnitztal cross-country ski trail offers a classic trail as well as a skating trail.

Cosy snack stations directly on the trail invite you to stop for refreshments. At the cross-country ski trail entry points in Trins (football pitch or Trinser Familienlift), Steinach and Gschnitz there are large panoramic boards where you can follow the entire course of the trail. Every 500 metres there is a marker board with distance information about the distance still to be covered.

Steinach high-altitude cross-country ski trail

Covering a total length of approx. 4.6 km, you can cross-country ski on this high-altitude trail (location between 1,588 and 1,610 m). Views of the Wipptal and its side valleys as well as the white peaks of the Zillertal and Stubai Alps are included. You start from the middle station of the Steinach mountain lift, ski along the Nösslach plateau to the Nösslachhütte.

Nösslach cross-country ski trail

This single-track circular trail stretches over 5 kilometres across the Nösslach plateau and is particularly appealing due to its sunny location and the magnificent panoramic view. You will find the entrance marked with a sign by the Pension Hörtnagl.

Obernberg cross-country ski trail

The classically guided valley trail with guaranteed snow starts next to the primary school in Obernberg. Along the beautiful valley floor of the Obernberger Tal, you pass the famous St. Nikolaus church and reach the Hinterennstal valley. There, the trail makes a large loop through the loose larch forest in the landscape conservation area. You can easily reach the trail by ski bus.
