Active winter in the Wipptal

You can actively experience and enjoy the winter in the Wipptal and its side valleys in many different ways during your holiday - thanks to the many possibilities that are offered to you around the Alpengasthof Hohe Burg.

Skiers will be happy about the numerous skiing areas nearby, fun tobogganing adventures await you on 9 toboggan runs, while a quiet and gentle 70 km of winter hiking trails and several snowshoe hiking routes invite you to get closer to nature.

Active fun in the Gschnitztal valley

In winter in the Gschnitztal valley, many different activities open up in the snow, so that you can make your holiday with us at Alpengasthof Hohe Burg nicely varied. In addition to ski tours and cross-country skiing, you can also explore the unspoilt natural landscape on snowshoes or dive deep into the snowy world on the winter hiking trails.

The toboggan runs are a bit more racy, and if you don't want to miss the ski slopes on your holiday, you can discover the Bergeralm ski area in Steinach am Brenner and others in the surrounding area in Tyrol and South Tyrol.

Skiing on a winter holiday

Skiing is always great fun, because who doesn't love whizzing down groomed slopes into the valley? Within a radius of 60 kilometres in the Innsbruck area in Tyrol and in Italy in South Tyrol, several popular ski resorts await you.

Just around the corner in Trins in the Gschnitztal valley, you can try your first turns at the family ski lift and really get into the swing of things. In the neighbouring municipality of Steinach am Brenner, you can enjoy a few more kilometres of slopes in the Bergeralm ski and leisure arena, including the steepest slope in Austria.

Bergeralm ski & leisure arena

The Bergeralm ski & leisure arena is a popular destination for skiing enthusiasts, as around 30 kilometres of perfectly groomed pistes at all levels of difficulty await you here at altitudes of between 1,000 and 2,200 m, awarded the Tyrolean piste quality seal. In addition, you can enjoy the beautiful view of the snow-covered Wipptal valley and modern lifts for a comfortable and safe ascent.

Thanks to its manageable size, the ski area is cosy, familiar and scores points for its uncrowded slopes. With the world champion slope "Manni Pranger" with a maximum gradient of 46 degrees (102 %!), it also has a lot to offer people with sporting ambition. Three times a week, the floodlights are switched on and then nothing stands in the way of night-time skiing fun!

Skiing in Tyrol & South Tyrol

From Alpengasthof Hohe Burg you can set off to a number of excellent skiing areas in the surrounding area. Around Innsbruck and across the border into Italy in South Tyrol, you can enjoy the freedom on the slopes and the flair of rustic huts during a cosy break in between:

  • Stubai Glacier - Stubai Valley/Tyrol (approx. 47 km away)
  • Kühtai Lifting - Sellraintal/Tyrol (approx. 60 km away)
  • Freizeitberg Rosskopf - Sterzing/South Tyrol (approx. 40 km away)
  • Ratschings Ski Area - Jaufen/South Tyrol (approx. 46 km away)

Tobogganing fun in the Wipptal

There's nothing like a fun tobogganing adventure in winter. Up with the toboggan, into the warm hut, and then step on the gas and down at full speed. Simply the best fun! Especially in the Wipptal valley, it's all great fun, thanks to the 9 perfectly groomed natural toboggan runs in various levels of difficulty (easy and medium) that lead through the beautiful winter landscape.

At the top, there's always a hut to stop at, and some of the tobogganing fun can even take place at night under lights.

Winter and snowshoe hikes

White nature, gentle silence, fresh air - the crunch of snow underfoot. Winter hiking is a pleasure and the exercise is good for you. Wrap up warm and off you go on the approx. 70 km of winter hiking trails in the Wipptal and its side valleys, some of which are well-maintained and cleared premium winter hiking trails (pink trail markings).

Huts along the way invite you to warm up. If you want to dive even deeper into nature off the beaten track, the best way to do this is on a beautiful snowshoe hike. In the Gschnitztal and the other side valleys, you will find several routes of all levels of difficulty.
